We were so excited to get started and had big plans. We were planning on sorting out recyclables, Goodwill donations, and items that could be put in a garage sale. Would we find antiques that we would be able to keep and use in the house? What treasures would be hidden?
But then reality hit! It was overwhelming to try to sort out what was in the house. Obviously animals had gotten into the house at one point and anything that had cloth on it needed to be gotten rid of. Everything was also coated with layers of dirt and dust. Things had been left in the barn in bags, but the bags had deteriorated and items that might have been salvageable no longer were.
After a couple of weeks of steady work and hauling 2 tons of stuff out, things are looking better.
The scrap metal guy stopped by (after a quick call from me) and picked up the refrigerator, cook range, air conditioner, microwave, furnace, and the wringer/washer that was buried in the back corner of the barn.
Once things thawed, we were began (much to our dismay) to find the trash left in the backyard and the woods behind the house. Add another ton of materials have been hauled away.
In total, we have removed around 6 tons of materials. We've paid to get rid of 4.51 tons, which does not include the bags of trash and small furniture that we left by the curb for pick up. It also does not include the metal or brush that we have removed, since we did not need to pay for that and, therefore, it didn't get weighed. Also, we did manage to donate a few things to Goodwill and to recycle a car load of magazines and cardboard. We also still have at least one truck load of metal to haul off and the pyramid of tires to deal with.
