stone walkway

I've been collecting pavers to make a stone walkway in front of the house.  The walkway will go along the front porch, in front of the bay window, and to the bulkhead entrance to the basement, that is once I have enough pavers and time to put them in.

barn renovations coming along

Martin has finished putting in the rafters on the barn roof.  He also changed how it was tied into the house with snow and water in mind.

The east side of the barn roof is sheathed.

The connecting roof between the house and the barn is sheathed.
Martin has covered the east roof and the connector to the house to protect it from the weather.

Clarification of the regrading

A friend had some clarifying questions about the regrading, and I realized that, even though I know what the pictures are showing, it doesn't mean that everyone else can decipher them.
The picture below shows the difference in the new grade (background) and the old grade (foreground).
I am working in sections to remove sod, top soil, sub soil.  Then hauling in sand and putting the sub soil, top soil, and sod back down.
I've staked out the area that will be a hedgerow between an tigin and the neighbor's property.

There isn't much regrading left to do. I am nearly at the road.

Regrading, slow but steady

The stump hole has been filled in.
We will be moving sod to cover this area soon.
The side yard is nearly up to grade.
Just this little bit of the front still to do.

barn renovations

Martini stripped the barn down to its bare bones.

Then he replaced anything that was rotten.
Now he is in the process of putting up rafters. He is using the floor joists from the house for rafters.
The old roof on the west side of the barn was not a straight line. It looked like an addition had been put on the barn at some point, or it was originally designed to look that way. To facilitate snow removal from the roof and to clean up the lines of the barn, it is now a straight roof.

The roof on the east side of the barn needs to tie into the house, so Martin needed to rebuild it with snow, rain, etc. issues in mind.

finding a match to the hinges we had

While in the process of renovating the barn, Martin took the doors off.  They had been held on by 4 hinges and there was a fifth matching hinge floating around.  At some point, once the barn has renovated walls, sheathing put back on, and a new metal roof, Martin will build new doors for the barn. Because of the weight of the doors he wanted each door to be held on by 3 hinges.  That meant we were short one hinge.
Cornish has lots of antique shops. We were convinced that a trip through the shops would turn up a matching hinge or even pair of hinges.
No luck.
I tried to stop by a salvage yard on a day that it was scheduled to be open - it was closed.
No luck.
Then while carpooling to work with a friend, I mentioned the struggles of trying to find a hinge.
Her quick reply was, "I assume you've looked on-line."
Well, umm, actually neither Martin nor I had even considered it.
As soon as I got home that night, I got on-line and within a few minutes had ordered 3 matching hinges, which have already arrived.
So, hats off to my co-worker for solving our hinge dilemma!
